ZOSTAVAX is a single-shot vaccine manufactured by Merck and is used to prevent herpes zoster, a viral disease known as “shingles” that causes a painful rash of blisters. It is typically administered to people 50-years of age or older who are more likely to contract the virus.

The vaccine was FDA approved in 2006 and remained the only approved shingles vaccine in the U.S. until 2017. ZOSTAVAX differs from other vaccines because it actually contains a live, but weakened strain of the “varicella-zoster virus”, the virus that leads to shingles.

Injured patients are now filing lawsuits against Merck for failing to warn patients about the serious potential side effects, one of which being shingles – the very thing it was designed to prevent, and a side effect that Merck failed to list until December 2014 – almost eight years after the vaccine was FDA approved.

Additionally, ZOSTAVAX is believed to lead to the following SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS OR CONDITIONS:

  • Shingles, which may spread from the skin to other organs
  • Postherpetic Neuralgia (burning sensation after rash has disappeared)
  • Nerve Pain
  • Vision Loss/Blindness
  • Retinitis (inflammation of retina of eye)
  • Retinal Necrosis (death or detachment of retina of eye)
  • Hearing Loss
  • Vertigo & Inner Ear Nerve Damage
  • Cardiovascular Injuries
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Neurological Infections
  • Meningitis
  • Encephalitis
  • Secondary bacterial infections from the shingles rash
  • Death
