2013

The scholarships for the 2013-2014 school year were awarded to three outstanding individuals: Sieu Tran, Jordan Dabney and Sarah Toney. We enjoyed getting to know these students through their applications and different correspondences and recently received the following updates:

JordanDabney1-300x300.jpg

Jordan Dabney attends Christopher Newport University and is soon to declare a major in Medicine. He is keeping busy with his school work and intramural sports. He loves that CNU is so small and he can get to know everyone.

SieuTran-300x300.jpg

Sieu Tran is studying Math at Virginia Tech and plans to add Biology as a second major. He is a part of the Honors program and is hoping to get the opportunity to study abroad in Switzerland.

Here’s an update from Sieu at the start of his Sophomore year:

Dear Joel Bieber Firm,

Thank you so much for writing back. I actually shared your website to a lot of people in college and my friends from High School too. I can’t never thank you enough.

About me, I am involved in quite a lot of things but my most proud achievement has to be the times in Compassionate Care Hospice. I get to serve the terminal-illed elderly. I love it. I am now a sophomore in college and still have a perfect GPA as a Math and Biology major with a Chemistry Minor.

Nevertheless, my semester is quite rough. Yet, I love my classes so far; the professors are spot-on.

Once again, I thank you for everything! Please do not stop supporting the future generation, because we will always need it.

Sincerely yours,

Sieu

Sarah-Toney.jpg

Sarah Toney is loving her time at Virginia Commonwealth University and her studies in Pre-Nursing. She is involved in many activities including the Rowdy Rams, Students Today-Alumni Tomorrow, and is a volunteer with the Sexual Assault and Violence Education Team.

Here’s an update from Sarah herself at the start of her Sophomore year:

Good morning Joel Bieber Firm!

Everything is going well at VCU. I finished my first year with a 4.0 and am officially a nursing student! I have already begun my first nursing class. I am in the process of applying to the Honors College and have added a psychology minor to my schedule. I am also working as a supervisor at the Farmers Market in Short Pump. As you can see I have A LOT going on this semester! I want to continue to succeed academically while staying active and building my resume. My goal this year is to be accepted into the Honors College and become Class Director (similar to a class president) for the nursing class of 2017! I think that those two things will keep me busy while providing me the opportunity to improve myself and network with students, faculty, and alumni.

Thank you!

Sarah

Hannah Matthew, 2006 B. Dorothy Bieber Essay Scholarship Recipient

Since graduating from Regent University with a bachelor’s degree in Business, Hannah has dedicated her time and efforts towards our nation’s Teach for America program. Hannah will be teaching at a title one school in Dallas, TX through 2014.

Magdalene Alvar, 2008 Carl D. and B. Dorothy Bieber Scholarship Recipient

Magdalene attended and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida. There, she double majored in Finance and Business Management. Currently, Magdalene works for Wilbanks, Smith, and Thomas Asset Management, LLC as a Portfolio Administrator; she is responsible for managing over 700 accounts. With her undergrad education and work experience, she is currently pursuing the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. When looking back, Magdalene states, “College was amazing and I loved every minute! I’m blessed to be able to say that I graduated college debt-free! Thanks to the help of my wonderful parents and of course, the Bieber scholarship monies.”

Jedidiah Ferrer, 2009 Carl D. Bieber History Scholarship Recipient

Now a senior attending Old Dominion University, Jedidiah has embraced the cultural and educational benefits ODU has to offer. Since his sophomore year, Jedidiah has actively been involved in the Filipino American Student Association (FASA). Not only has he participated in numerous cultural shows over the years, he is now the Active President for the organization. Academically, Jedidiah is working towards a major in Computer Engineering with minors in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. As for Jedidiah’s future, he has applied to the Accelerated BS/MS program at ODU, where he will be able to complete a Master’s degree.

While Jedidiah has found success, he discovered his college experience takes a lot of “juggling responsibilities” between school and extracurricular activities. In regards to one of the most important aspects of college, Jedidiah states, “the things that I’ll truly never forgot aren’t necessarily academic in nature- as I’ve made countless friends.”
